Privacy Policy

The short version

AlphaDictate transcribes speech entirely on your computer. The app does not upload your microphone audio, transcripts, dictation history, or diagnostic log for transcription or analytics. Internet access is used to download speech models, check for and download app updates, and, after you enter a license key, activate and periodically check the license. Microsoft Store installations receive updates through the Store instead of AlphaDictate's GitHub updater.

What the app processes locally (and we never see)

  • Microphone audio, which is transcribed on your device and discarded or kept in your local history per your settings.
  • Transcripts and dictation history, stored on your machine.
  • The diagnostic log, stored on your machine. It is shared with us only if you choose to paste it into a support email yourself.

The app contains no analytics, telemetry, or advertising of any kind.

What we receive, and why

  • Model downloads. When you choose a speech model, the app downloads it from Hugging Face and its download infrastructure. Those services receive the ordinary information involved in an internet request, including your IP address and request metadata. They do not receive your audio or transcripts.
  • App updates. Direct Windows installations check AlphaDictate's GitHub release feed and may download an update in the background. GitHub receives ordinary request information, including your IP address and request metadata. Microsoft Store installations use Microsoft's update service instead.
  • Purchases are processed by Stripe. Your payment details go to Stripe. We receive and store your purchase email, Stripe customer, subscription or payment identifiers, plan and license status so we can issue and manage your license. Our licensing service also retains the complete Stripe webhook event used to process each purchase, subscription or refund event. Depending on the checkout information Stripe collects, that event can include your name, billing address and other purchase metadata. Stripe's own privacy policy applies to the payment itself.
  • License activation. When you enter a license key, the app sends the key, a one-way-hashed machine identifier (the raw identifier never leaves your device), your computer's hostname, the app version, and, inherently to any internet request, your IP address. We use this solely to operate the per-license device limit and to prevent abuse. The app repeats this check quietly every few days.
  • Email. License emails are delivered via Postmark. We send transactional email only (your key, receipts, replies to your messages), never marketing without your consent.
  • Support. If you email us, we receive what you send, including any log you choose to include.
  • This website is hosted on Netlify, which keeps standard server logs. Fonts load from Bunny Fonts, which receives ordinary request information such as your IP address. We measure website traffic with PostHog (hosted in the EU) in cookieless mode: it records the pages you view, the referring site, your country, browser and device type, and which links and buttons you click. It sets no cookies and stores no identifier in your browser; visits within one day are grouped by a salted hash of your IP address and browser that cannot be reversed or linked across days or sites. It never sees anything you dictate or type into forms. The site stores only your dismissed language suggestion in your browser's local storage. The "lost your key" form sends the address you type to our licensing server for the sole purpose of resending your key.

Sharing and retention

We use Stripe for payments, Postmark for transactional email, Netlify to host the website, Bunny Fonts to deliver web fonts, PostHog to measure website traffic, DigitalOcean to host the licensing service, Hugging Face to deliver speech models, GitHub to deliver direct-install updates, and Microsoft Store to deliver Store installations and updates. Each provider receives only the information described above or the ordinary request data needed to provide its service. We do not sell personal information.

License, device, subscription, purchase and Stripe webhook-event records currently have no automatic deletion date in the licensing service. Daily server backups are retained for 14 days. Some purchase records must also be retained for tax and accounting obligations. You may ask us to delete information that we do not need to keep for those obligations.

Your choices

The 60-minute trial is counted locally and requires no AlphaDictate account or license check. A model download and, for direct installations, app update checks can still use the internet during the trial. To ask what we hold about you, or to request deletion subject to billing and legal record requirements, email hello@alphadictate.com.

Changes

If this policy changes, the current version will always be at this address, with its effective date above. AlphaDictate is not directed at children under 13.
