Dragon NaturallySpeaking is over. Here is what actually happened

If you searched "is Dragon discontinued", here is the short answer. The consumer product is gone. The mobile app stopped taking subscriptions in July 2026. The one desktop edition still sold is a $699 Windows program that last shipped a major version in February 2023, and the official page for it no longer has a buy button, only "Contact us". Nothing has been announced to replace any of it for individuals.

Nobody at Microsoft has said "Dragon is dead", and for hospitals it is very much alive. But if you bought Dragon Home in a box, the product line you knew has been wound down one edition at a time. Here are the dates with sources, what Microsoft is doing instead, and what to use now.

The timeline

Two details in that table deserve a second look. Dragon Home was the edition normal people bought. It got no version 16, and its end-of-sale notice came the day before v16 shipped, so the only upgrade path for a $150 customer was a $699 professional licence. And the Dragon Anywhere product page on Nuance's own site still invites you to "purchase your Dragon Anywhere Mobile subscription" two months after the App Store listing says you cannot. That is what a product line looks like when nobody is minding it any more.

What Microsoft is doing instead

Microsoft paid roughly $19.7 billion for Nuance, and the thing it bought is healthcare. The Dragon name now leads on Dragon Copilot, the ambient clinical documentation product formerly called DAX, which listens to a doctor's consultation and drafts the note. Resellers quote it at several hundred dollars per clinician per month. Dragon Medical One, the cloud dictation service for clinicians, continues alongside it. Both are sold to health systems, not to you.

For everyone else, Microsoft's answer is built into Windows 11. Voice Access does the command-and-control part that Dragon pioneered: click things by name, show numbered overlays, dictate and correct by voice, all processed on the device. Windows key + H is the quick voice-typing layer that sends audio to Microsoft's servers. Neither is a paid product, and neither will ever have a sales team calling you back, which tells you where consumer Dragon stands in the plan.

What you are actually losing

It would be dishonest to pretend a lightweight dictation tool replaces Dragon. Four things made Dragon what it was, and only some of them exist elsewhere.

Voice control of the whole computer. Selecting text by voice, correcting the word you just said, driving menus. For people who cannot use a keyboard this is the product, and the dictation is a side effect.

Trained vocabularies. Drug names, case citations, your clients' surnames, learned over months from your corrections.

Structured correction. "Correct that", "scratch that", "select the last sentence". A grammar for fixing text by voice, not just producing it.

Integrations. The Word add-in, the legal templates, the electronic health record connections.

Modern speech models changed the economics of the one thing missing from that list, which nobody mentions because it was never Dragon's strength: raw accuracy on ordinary speech. Whisper-class models have heard so much speech that they do not need a profile to reach the accuracy Dragon needed weeks of training to deliver. What they do not give you is the control layer. Keep that distinction in mind while reading the next section.

What to use now, by what you needed Dragon for

You need to operate the computer by voice. Start with Voice Access. It is free, already installed on Windows 11 22H2 and later, works offline, and covers navigation, clicking, window management and dictation with spoken corrections. Its weak points are language coverage, seven languages in fifteen regional variants, and the absence of custom command scripting. If you are a programmer who needs that scripting, Talon is the community's answer and its Slack has a channel full of people who arrived from Dragon.

You need to dictate text into any application. This is most former Dragon Home users, and the field is wide open. Windows key + H is free and adequate for short bursts, with the audio going to Microsoft. Local Whisper-based apps run the model on your own graphics card so nothing leaves the machine, and they tend to handle accents and mixed languages better than a trained profile ever did. AlphaDictate is ours: a key to start, the same key to stop, text pasted where your cursor was, 99 languages, $39 a year after a free hour. Handy is a free, open-source alternative in the same local category. Wispr Flow is the polished cloud option at roughly $15 a month if you do not mind the audio leaving your PC.

You dictate for medicine or law. Dragon Medical One is the supported line for clinicians and is sold through your organisation. Dragon Legal v16 still exists through resellers at about a hundred dollars more than Professional. Both are the right answer if the vocabularies and integrations are the reason you bought Dragon. A general-purpose local model with a typed vocabulary hint handles straight transcription in either field, but it does not fill in a template or talk to your practice management system.

You are on a Mac. There has been no Dragon for eight years. Apple's built-in dictation, MacWhisper and Superwhisper cover the dictation side; Voice Control in macOS covers the command side.

You used Dragon Anywhere on your phone. Existing subscriptions run out and cannot be renewed. Both phone platforms have on-device dictation built into their keyboards, and any notes app on a phone now transcribes better than Dragon Anywhere did at $150 a year.

If you still own Dragon 15 or 16

Keep using it. A perpetual licence keeps working, and Nuance's advisory says owners "are not required to take any action". Two things to plan around. First, there will be no security fixes or compatibility updates for v15, and Windows updates have broken it before: the 2022 Windows 11 22H2 update left users reinstalling from a removal tool to get the microphone icon to turn green again, and v16 had to be re-engineered without the Windows journal playback hooks v15 depended on. Second, Nuance's own Windows 10 end-of-support note says that if a problem turns out to be caused by Windows 10, "the User must upgrade to Windows 11 and Dragon v16 software". Read that as the support policy it is: the fix for an old Dragon is buying the new one.

If you are deciding whether to spend $699 on v16 today, the honest framing is that you would be buying the last version of a product whose owner has moved on, at more than double what the previous generation cost, and setting up a training profile for accuracy that a free model now delivers without one. Buy it if you need the control layer and nothing else will do. Do not buy it for dictation.

We make a dictation tool, so weigh our recommendation accordingly. We listed Microsoft's own tools and a free competitor first, and every date above links to its primary source.

Frequently asked

Is Dragon NaturallySpeaking discontinued? The consumer editions are. Dragon Home and the whole v15 line ended sale on 27 February 2023 with no further updates or security patches, and Dragon Anywhere stopped selling on 1 July 2026. Dragon Professional v16 and Dragon Legal v16 are still sold for Windows, mainly through resellers and by contacting sales.

Can I still buy Dragon Home? Not new. There was no Dragon Home 16, and leftover copies of Home 15 on marketplaces are unsupported software with no updates coming.

Does Dragon work on Windows 11? Version 16 is built for Windows 11. Version 15 mostly runs but is unsupported, and Windows updates have broken it before.

Is there a Dragon for Mac? No. It was discontinued in October 2018 and never came back.

What is the free alternative to Dragon? For voice control of the PC, Voice Access built into Windows 11. For dictation, Windows key + H, or a local open-source app such as Handy.

What is the closest paid replacement for Dragon Home? For typing by voice into any app, a local dictation tool such as AlphaDictate at $39 a year, or a cloud one such as Wispr Flow. None of them replaces Dragon's voice commands, so pair them with Voice Access if you need those.
